Dr. Alexander Bauer, Queens College

Alex is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Queens College, CUNY, and serves as the Associate Director of the Sinop Regional Archaeological Project, having joined the project as a new graduate student in 1997 and digging his way up. He specializes in pre-Colonial (Chalcolthic, Bronze Age, Early Iron Age) Sinop, and coordinates the analytical program investigating pottery technology, primarily using a portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) laboratory set up on site. His research interests include ancient trade and interaction and the study of material culture, and he is an expert in cultural heritage law and policy, having been the editor-in-chief of that field’s flagship journal, The International Journal of Cultural Property, since 2004. He is a lover of the sea and of good food, both of which make Sinop the perfect place to work.
